Thank you for electing to take you emergency first aid and safety course with Athens CPR & Safety. All courses have been updated to reflect new science in the 2020 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC, as well as the 2019 Update to the 2018 ASA Ischemic Stroke Guidelines. This course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants and meets OSHA/workplace requirements. This is an instructor-led classroom session. Allow approximately 4 hours 30 minutes to complete the course. Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a digital certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years. 

The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED r.21 program is designed to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person when minutes matter, and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed. 

Learning Objectives

■ Describe how to recognize an emergency and gain confidence to act.

■ Explain how to lower the risk for infection when giving care.

■ Understand legal concepts as they apply to lay responders, such as consent.

■ Describe the emergency action steps: CHECK—CALL—CARE.

■ Identify when it is necessary to call 9-1-1 or the designated emergency number.

■ Explain how to check an injured or ill person who appears to be unresponsive. ■ Explain how to check a responsive injured or ill person.

■ Demonstrate high-quality CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) for a person who is in cardiac arrest.

■ Demonstrate first aid care for a person who is choking.

■ Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following sudden illnesses: shock, asthma attack, anaphylaxis, heart attack, opioid overdose, diabetic emergencies, high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration.

■ Describe methods used to control life-threatening bleeding, including the application of direct pressure and the application of a commercial tourniquet.

■ Demonstrate the application of direct pressure to control life-threatening bleeding.

■ Explain when a commercial tourniquet should be used, and describe the basic principles of using a tourniquet.

■ Recognize the signs and symptoms of, and describe appropriate first aid care for, the following injuries and environmental illnesses: burns; head, neck and spinal injuries (including concussion); heat stroke; hypothermia; poison exposure.

This course will prepare you to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants and meets OSHA/workplace requirements. This is a blended learning course including an online portion and an instructor-led classroom skill session.The online portion must be completed prior to attending the in-class portion and must be taken on aPC or tablet with a high speed Internet connection.Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to complete the online portion.Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a digital certificate for Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED valid for two years.

BLS is geared towards prehospital providers, like EMTs, paramedics, fire fighters, and in-facility hospital providers. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years. Please contact your employer to ensure that you are selecting the correct course.

The BLS Instructor-led course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both prehospital and in-facility environments, with a focus on High-Quality CPR and team dynamics.

COURSE REQUIRMENTS

Certification
American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course Completion Card is valid for two years.

In the classroom, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice and skills testing. Students also complete a written exam.

If you choose to purchase a participants manual please ask front dest staff to provide it PRIOR to class start time.

This is a renewal course. You must have current unexpired provider level certification prio to enrolling in this course.

Heartsaver® First Aid Training

 

The Heartsaver First Aid course trains participants first aid basics for the most common first aid emergencies, including how to recognize them, how to call for help, and how to perform lifesaving skills. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) and the 2015 AHA/Red Cross Guidelines for First Aid.

Who should take this course?

The AHA Heartsaver First Aid Course is designed for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in first aid to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements.

The AHA Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course is designed for anyone with a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens such as: Correctional OfficersChildcare workersSecurity guardsMaintenance workersSchool personnelHotel housekeepersHealth and fitness club staff, and Tattoo artists.

The American Heart Association offers the BLS ( Basic Life Support) course in a Blended format.

The blended format includes both “Online eLearning and Classroom Skill Sessions”

Once you register, you will receive an email with the keycode to access the online portion.  You will then arrange a day/time for you to come in to complete the skills portion.  You can either call or email to schedule.

The eLearning portion of the BLS blended learning course is designed to teach students the cognitive information needed for CPR and AED training. Upon completion of the online portion, students must complete hands-on skills session with an AHA BLS Instructor. This format provides the student with the convenience of completing the course at their own pace wherever they have access to the Internet. It includes interactive exercises and videos to engage students and provide periodic points of knowledge transference, along with audio and transcript for students who may have a hearing or visual disability, and much more.

BLS is the foundation for saving lives after cardiac arrest. HeartCode BLS is the AHA’s blended learning delivery method for the BLS Course. Blended learning is a combination of eLearning (online portion), in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on session. HeartCode BLS includes 8 modules, 4 eSimulations, and two video tutorials.

Students can access the BLS for Healthcare Providers Student Manual, BLS Pocket Reference Card and more for 24 months.

This course may be used for initial or renewal BLS for Healthcare Providers Course completion.

Hands on Skill session with a certified American Heart Association Instructor.

This session normally takes from 40 minutes to an hour.

This web-based eLearning course, jointly developed by the AHA and the American Medical Association, is a competency training course focused on proper in-office blood pressure (BP) measurement. The course is designed to educate healthcare professionals on how to measure BP accurately on all three BP measurement devices: manual; semi-automated; and automated. It also aims to help clinicians achieve competence in consistent, accurate BP measurement and improve confidence in their ability to better identify patients at risk for hypertension.

Due to COVID-19 and the heightened demand for ventilator management, health care providers with minimal understanding of mechanical ventilation or ventilators may be tasked with managing these complex patients. This self-directed, adaptive eLearning course has been designed to help health care providers in the acute care setting improve knowledge and competence in mechanical ventilation skills.

This adaptive course focuses on the information participants need most. At the beginning of the course participants can identify their skill level and the course continuously uses knowledge checks to measure level of knowledge and adjust the focus of the content.

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online teaches employees how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials. This course is designed to meet OSHA requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction. This course provides students with the convenience of completing the course at their own pace wherever they have access to the Internet. It includes interactive exercises and videos to engage students and provide periodic points of knowledge transference, along with audio and transcript for students who may have a hearing or visual disability, and much more.

Students will learn single-rescuer and team basic life support for adults, children and infants through 5 interactive exercises, scenarios and a written test. Navigation controls allow students to move easily through content as they learn how to recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilation and provide early use of an AED. Course also teaches relief of choking.

This self-paced course is accessible anytime from any computer. Students can access the BLS for Healthcare Providers Student Manual, BLS Pocket Reference Card and more for 24 months.

This course may be used for initial or renewal BLS for Healthcare Providers Course completion.

Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED Online is the eLearning portion of the Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED blended learning course and is designed to teach students the cognitive information needed for first aid, CPR and AED training. Upon completion of the online portion, students must complete hands-on skills session with an AHA BLS or Heartsaver Instructor. This course provides students with the convenience of completing the course at their own pace wherever they have access to the Internet. It includes interactive exercises and videos to engage students and provide periodic points of knowledge transference, along with audio and transcript for students who may have a hearing or visual disability, and much more.

Self-directed, online portion of the BLS Instructor Essentials blended learning course covering steps for becoming an AHA Instructor and steps of the instruction cycle.

Opioid Education for Healthcare Providers is a self-directed, eLearning course is for use by a single student that includes modules such as recognition and treatment of opioid overdose (use of CPR and reversal agents), details of the opioid epidemic and opioid use disorder, pathophysiology of pain and opioids leading to addiction, and managing acute pain with alternative pain management options.

This 30 minute long course educates participants in the pathophysiology of opioid overdose; special considerations on how to care for overdose patients, including naloxone administration; recognizing the need for high-quality CPR; and use of a defibrillator.
